Homelessness affects thousands of women and children in New York City every year. In 2024 alone, over 12,400 families found shelter thanks to the efforts of Women In Need (WIN), a non-profit organization dedicated to providing housing and support for those in crisis. Soul Search Art’s "Rise" fundraiser has partnered with WIN to bring attention and resources to this urgent issue through a unique art exhibition. This event is more than a display of creativity; it is a call to action to help women and children finding stability and hope.

The Purpose Behind the Rise Fundraiser

The "Rise" fundraiser was designed to raise both awareness and funds for women and children experiencing homelessness in New York City. By collaborating with WIN, Soul Search Art aims to support a cause that directly impacts thousands of families everyday. WIN’s work includes emergency shelter, housing placement, and supportive services that help families regain independence and security.

This fundraiser uses art as a powerful tool to connect people emotionally to the cause. Art has the ability to inspire empathy and motivate action, making it an ideal medium to highlight the struggles and resilience of women and children facing homelessness.

Meet the Artists Behind the Project

As attendees enjoyed delightful beverages during the exhibition, the artists who contributed their work to the fundraiser left art enthusiasts inspired. Renowned artists Darlene Deloris, Ashante Josey, Marques Isiah Edwards, and Ifeoma have come together for this event. Each artist offers a distinct perspective and style, resulting in a diverse collection that embodies the spirit of hope and renewal.

Darlene Deloris employs vivid multimedia and striking symbolic descriptions to convey strength and personal narratives in each artwork. She has personal knowledge of these women. At the exhibition, art enthusiasts were delighted and amazed as they discovered and connected with the women depicted in these art pieces.

Ashante Josey focuses on creating intimate portraits that emphasize the dignity of the black women she portrays. Art lovers not only admired Ashante's piece "Glass Beads," but they were also excited to see it in person for the first time after a month of online promotion.

Edwards, "One Winged Angel"

Marques Isiah Edwards combines abstract forms with digital storytelling components to express emotional depth. Through works like "Then There's You" and "One Winged Angel," Marques's art resonated with the 55% of Black women at WIN, highlighting the remarkable nature of being a woman of color and the possibility of overcoming various challenges.

Ifeoma, "Pretty in Pink"

Ifeoma's passion for illustration and her appreciation for the Black diaspora added the perfect touch! Her artwork was exactly what Rise needed to capture the interest of our younger audience. Ifeoma's "Pretty in Pink" introduced a lightness that we knew would bring smiles not only to our child audience but also to the mothers who understood the feeling of being liberated from life's challenges.

Their collaboration is a testament to how art can unite voices and inspire change. The pieces they have created for "Rise" are not only visually striking but also carry messages of empowerment and support.

How the Fundraiser Supports WIN’s Mission

Funds raised through the "Rise" exhibition will directly benefit WIN’s programs. These programs include:

  • Emergency shelter for women and children escaping unsafe situations

  • Transitional housing that offers stability while families rebuild their lives

  • Support services such as counseling, job training, and childcare assistance

Art enthusiasts who have visited the exhibition or bought artwork play a crucial role in supporting these essential services. Each dollar aids WIN in offering a secure place to sleep, meals, and resources that assist families in progressing towards permanent housing.

Why Supporting Women and Children Matters

Women and children are among the most vulnerable groups affected by homelessness. Many women fleeing domestic violence or facing economic hardship find themselves without a safe place to live. Children in these situations often experience disruptions in education, health challenges, and emotional trauma.

Supporting organizations like WIN means giving these families a chance to break the cycle of homelessness. It means helping children grow up in safe environments and women regain control over their futures.

How You Can Get Involved

Contribute directly to WIN to aid their continuous programs. At present, WIN is consistently accepting donations on their website at www.winnyc.org.

Each action makes a difference. By participating in this cause, you join a community dedicated to making a lasting impact.
